o- (bu/-) medical science, medicine. obusawo bw'ebisolo, veterinary science, cf. omusawo, ensawo; sawula.

nzize) v.i. return, come back; go back; go; come up (of crops); take effect (of medicine), kudda mu mbeera, to return to normal, kudda mu maziga, to burst into tears; kudda mu ddiiro, to do a job over (because it was poorly done the first time); to dance again, kudda ngulu, to regain consciousness; to wake up. kudda buto, to become childish, enter one's second childhood (see buto for additional meanings). kudda ku mabbali, to stand aside, kudda mu bi- gere bya..., to follow in the footsteps of, succeed. Tayinza kudda awo kumala bi- seera bye. He can't just stand around and waste his time, abanlu abatalina kadda eri mumwa, people who have nothing to eat, lit. who do not have (a little thing, kantu implied) which returns to the lip. Emmere ezze. The food has been vomited up or The crops have come up.

e- plur. amalagala (li/ma) leaf (but not of a plantain); medicine; drug; chemical, in the plur. foliage, eddagala ly'engatto, shoe polish, eddagala eritta ebiwuka, insecticide, eddagala ly'amannyo, toothpaste, eddagala ly'enviiri, hair tonic, eddagala eryerusa, Jjlectuluiig cieain. tsdda- gaia erigonza olubuto or eddagala ly'oku- ddukana, laxative, eddagala^ ly'enjala, nail polish, cf. akalagala, kiragala, olulagaia.

very skillful person. Yali ffuluku mu kukwata emisota. He was very skillful in his ability to handle snakes. Abantu bamwogerako nga ffuluku mu kumannya eddagala ery'ekinnansi. The people described him as being an expert in (knowing) native medicine.

a- (ka/bu) small plantain/banana leaf; small amount of medicine. Emmere eno ya kalagala. This food is not overly well done. cf. eddagala, 1 kiragala, olulagala.

e- used with the -a of rel. native, indigenous, eddagala ly'ekinnansi, native medicine, cf. munnansi, nsi.

e- (ki/bi) medicine, ebirezi ebi- nnansi, native medicines, cf. lera.

e- (ki/bi) a banana leaf that is carefully smoked over the fire and used as a container for locally made medicine; plume of banana leaves for ornamenting beer gourds of important people, cf. ol li worn ho.

e- (ki/bi) wound. Ekiwundu kyasamba eddagala. The situation is very serious/bad lit. the wound kicked the medicine cf. sseziwundu.

kolebwa (-koleddwa) v.i. pass, be done/made, etc. Abalwadde balabika oku- kolwako eddagala lino. The sick people seem to be favorably affected by this medicine.

be effective (e.g., of a medicine.); come to pass, turn out to be true. Ebigambo by'omulaguzi byalaka bulungi. The predictions {lit. words) of the seer actually came to pass. Omulimu gulase. The work has reached the point where it is producing results.

etc.; prescribe for. Yamulambira eddagala. He prescribed medicine for him.

o- (lu/n) charm/native medicine to produce childbirth, cf. zaala.

e- (n/n) a mixture of clay and native medicines formed into a cylindrical shape. It is stored in a dry state and, as the occasion requires, it is mixed with water and used as a medicine, cf. bumba.

e- (n/n) needle; injection, eddagala ly'empiso, medicine which is administered by injection, kukuba mpiso, to inject with with a needle; fig. to bribe, cf. obuyiso, eggwiso, akayiso.

etc. okutambulira ku bu- nkenke, to walk on tiptoe, okutambulira omuntu, lit. to travel around because of somebody, i.e., to obtain magic formulae, medicines, potions, etc., and use them to hex a person, to bend him to one's will or do him bodily harm.

nnyenze) v.tr. stir and dissolve; dilute; mix. okuyenga enfuufu, to stir up dust; to play in the dirt (of children). Omukisa omuzaale gukira omuyengere edda- gala. (prov.) Good fortune/luck is better than that obtained by mixing medicines.

reject, refuse (e.g., food., a present); abhor, v.i. be taboo/ forbidden. Eddagala lino lizira omunnyu. This medicine cannot go together with/cannot be mixed with salt, ekibala ekizira, forbidden, fruit.

omu- kessi nnakinku, master spy. nnakinku w'eddagala ery'ekinnansi, great authority on native medicine, omutezi w'obusoio nnaki- nkn, expert trapper, cf. obwannakinku, munnakinku.

okutenga ekigwo, to hurl (a person) to the ground, okutenga olubuto, to massage the abdomen with a special medicine so that a child may be bom without difficulty.

v.i. become deserted/abandoned/vacated (originally of a termite hill); go away; fig. become stupid/'empty in the head;' become discredited. Obugagga bwe yalina bwonna bwafuluka. The wealth which he had has all disappeared. Yafu- luka mu busawo. He lost his reputation in (the profession of) medicine.

o- (mu/ba) [Lunyoro~\ magician; medicine man; doctor.

o- (mu/mi) good luck; the smoking of medicine for the purpose of producing good (or sometimes bad) effects on others, c f. fuuwa.

(la) kind of climbing plant the leaves of which are used as a medicine to cure colic pains.

o- (mu/mi) kind of very tall hardwood tree, lit. it brings up/nurtures (kuza) the calf (nnyana). (Perhaps so called because the tree yields an aperient medicine for cattle.) okukubisa emiku- zannyana, to beat with sticks.
