a- adv. at a great speed, lit. (the breeze; akawewo is implied by ka-) which blows away (akafuumuula) the termites (mpawu). Emmotoka yabayitako kafuumuulampawu. The car zoomed past them, with cap. Kafuumuulampawu, the tenth month of the Kiganda calendar, corresponding to October, cf. ^mwezi.

a- (ka/bu) insolence, impudence.

e- (ki/bi) basket-like structure made of papyrus which serves as a crib for babies; crib.

e- (ki/bi) measure, measurement; size; build; extent, with the -a of rel. moderate. Kirungi omwenge onywenga gwa kigero. You should drink beer in moderation. Obuyivu bwabwe si bwa kigero eki- bayinzisa okusoma ebitabo bino. Their education is not sufficient to enable them to read these books, cf. ^gera.

e- (ki/bi) arm of lake/sea, cove, estuary, inlet; bay. cf. omukono.

e- (ki/bi) large plaited basket. Entongooli y'emu ku bivuga bye bayita ebizibu okukuba, naye abaana baffe abo bayisa mukka mu kisero. The entongooli is one of the instruments which is described as difficult to play, but our children play it without any trouble at all, lit. they pass air through the basket.

e- (ki/bi) watch of the night; sleep, okukwata ekisisimuka, to sleep. Ali mu kisisimuka. Heis asleep. E Bu- ngereza twakubayo ebisisimuka bibiri nga tugenda mu America. We spent two nights in England on our way to America, cf. sisimuka.

e- (ki/bi) usually plur. pus formation in a sore eye; matter which accumulates in the eyes during sleep; colloq. miserable, hateful wretch, \bantu abaali eyo ow'enjo- gcra in hi ug'abayiia binyinyi. Tnere were an enormous number of people there, lit. one who uses bad language would call them binyinyi. cf. akanyinyi.

e- with the -a of rel. mediocre; moderate. Embaga yaabwe yabadde ya kiyabayaba. Their wedding was a mediocre (affair), mu ngeri ya kiyabayaba, in a mediocre manner, imperfectly, cf. -yabaya- ba.

e- (li/ma) lump; clump; mass; large pill/tablet. Emboozi yagwa amakerenda. They (or we) had a long and pleasant conversation. Kkerenda liva ku lubaya. (prov.) lit. The lump comes fnom the large packet. Like father, like son. cf. akakerenda.

in a hurry; briefly; without stopping. Twabayitako kkuutwe. We passed by them quickly without stopping.

e- (ki/bi) a large bay, gulf; peninsula; cape; point.

o- (lu/n) large packet of salt, kusi- tula lubaya, to lift a very heavy load; to attempt a very difficult task (esp. something in which others have failed). Anti laba, zitutte olubaya! Look who has just passed by (esp. of somebody disliked- zitutte = empewo zitutte, the winds have taken). See also ekkerenda.

ku- simba maaso, to look at/watch closely, ku- simba liiso, to stare at. kusimba kabuuzo, to question/grill intensively, kusimba bwanda, to stay put in one place, kusimba makanda, to make one's headquarters or regular base (at), kusimba mboozi na muntu, to have a long conversation with a person, kusimba bigambo, to be an interesting and effective speaker, kusimba nnwe mu mmere, to pick at one's food, kusimba kattabagole (lit. - it kills the newlyweds!, to jab someone with one's elbow, kwegayirira n'osimba n'omutwe, to plead with earnestly, ku- simbako bwala ku muntu, to apprehend/capture a person. Yalwala n'asimbayo ne ki- tooke. He recovered after a long illness which had brought him to the brink of death. Ajjaokusimba ennyo amannyo ku nsonga eyo. He will stress/emphasize (lit. plant the teeth in) this reason. Tugakusimbye okulaba nga... (high tone) particle used: 1) as a preposition meaning like. Alya nga nsolo. He eats like an animal. 2) before a relative form of the verb. Yalabika ng'afumba. She seemed to be cooking, lit. like one who cooks. This is identical in form with 1), differing only in English rendition. 3) in the sense of about, approximately, abantu nga makumi abiri, about twenty people. 4) in conjunction with bwe, corresponding to the English conjunctions how or as. Kola nga (nze) bwe nkola. Do as (lit. like how) I do. 5) os an initial element in an exclamatory clause. Nga bayimba bulungi! How well they sing! (E.O.A.)

(low tone) particle used: 1) as the introductory element in the second of two closely related clauses. The corresponding English may be a verbal participle; in other cases nga may be rendered how, how much. Mbalaba nga batambula mu kkubo. I see them walking in the road. Bwe yalaba ng'akooye n'asaba okuwummula. When he saw how tired he was, he asked to rest. 2) as the equivalent of the English conjunction if. Nga tebatuuse ku ssaawa bbiri, tobalindirira. If they have not arrived by eight o'clock, do not wait for them. 3) as the equivalent of the English conjunction when. Ng'otuuse obandabiranga. When you arrive give them my regards. 4) in conjunction with bwe, meaning while, as. Tunyumye nga bwe tuwaata. Let us converse as/while we are peeling. 5) as the introductory element in a ‘not yet' clause (= neg. + -nna-). Toweereza bbaluwa ezo nga sinnakugamba. Do not send off the letters before I tell you. 6) as an untranslatable element in some compound tenses. Babadde nga bayimba we nnagendeddeyo. They were singing when I went there. (E.O.A.)

o- (mu/ba) The members of the Heart Clan (Ekika ky'Omutima) are sometimes called Abayanja. It is thought that they came originally from the Ssese Islands. cf. ennyanja.

-tya = -ti + a. -ti is a defective verb uninflected for tense but with the sub. prefixes. -tya is rendered how? in what manner? Bayimba batya? How do they sing? Kiri kitya? How is it? cf. ^-ti, -tyo.

like this, thus (in the manner already mentioned), -tyo is often preceded by bwe. Ekikere kibuuka (bwe) kityo. The frog jumps like that (as I have already told you), -tyo -tyo, not very well, so-so. Baali bayisibwa batyo batyo. They were not treated very well. cf. otyo, 1-ti, -tya.
