e- plur. amalenge (li/ma) small wind instrument, whistle, reed pipe made of bamboo; measure for a charge of gunpowder. Enjala wano efuuwa n'ama lenge. The hunger here is beyond belief, lit. is blowing whistles, cf. ^akalenge, kirenge, orau- lenge. See also fuuwa and fuuyira.

blow on. oku- fukuta emivubo, to blow with a pair of bellows. okufukuta amazzi, to gargle with water, okufukuta ekyuma, to melt metal (e.g., with a blowtorch), kuwoza gufukula, to talk nonsense (gu- implies muliro, fire), kufukuta lulimi, to speak a language (usually English) fluently. Bwe yatuuse mu dduuka n'afukutira omutunzi Oluzungu nga gw'alufukutira talina ky'aggyamu. When he arrived in the store he spoke English to the salesman, but the person to whom he was talking did not get anything out of it.

a- adv. at a great speed, lit. (the breeze; akawewo is implied by ka-) which blows away (akafuumuula) the termites (mpawu). Emmotoka yabayitako kafuumuulampawu. The car zoomed past them, with cap. Kafuumuulampawu, the tenth month of the Kiganda calendar, corresponding to October, cf. ^mwezi.

a- (ka/bu) small chain, okwesala akajegere, to go into a rage, ‘blow one's top.' cf. olujegere.

Enkuba yatonnye n'omugga ne gufuuwa. It rained and the river flooded over. Yafuuwa ekiwa ng'akizza munda. He drew in his breath in surprise, lit. blew a whistle and brought it back inside, kafuuwe or (more often) kikafuuwe! God forbid! Don't say things like that! kufuuwa musaayi, to spurt blood, kufuuwa taaba, to smoke (tobacco). Nnabbubi yamufuuye. The spider got on him and caused a rash. Ofuuwako? colloq. Do you drink (alcohol)?

kufuuyirira kanwe (or kagalo), to wish someone bad luck; to wait impatiently for a desired event, lit. to keep blowing on one's little finger. Fuuyirira enkuba ereme kutonnya. Keep your fingers crossed (make a wish) that it won't rain. Nga bw'ampisizza bw'atyo nja kumufuuvirira agwe ebibuuzo. Since he has treated me in this fashion, I hope/I am going to make a wish that he flunks his examinations.

okufuuyiza omusulo, colloq. to urinate, as an adv. in the phrase okulya fuuyiza, to eat too much; to eat without any discrimination/sense of selection.

-etukuta (-etukuse) v.i. refl. get bruised; turn black and blue; become swollen (after a blow).

‘blow oneself up;' march, parade; go beyond one's capacities. Oba tewewulira bulungi leka kwewaga kukola mirimu. If you don't feel well, don't force yourself to work. cf. akawago, ekiwago, ekyewago, oluwago.

to excel one's companions (in class), be at the head of the class, kwetikka bantu, to monopolize the conversation when talking with people, kwetikka nju, to talk loud and long and permit no one to interrupt. Mu kwogera teye- tikka nju. He is not a loud talker. Enfuufu yeetisse. The dust has blown all over, kwetikka lutwe, to put the blame on, accuse falsely. Totwetikka lutwe. Don't put the blame on us.
