a- (ka/bu) second totem of a clan. It differs from the first totem in that there is no taboo against eating it.

a- (ka/bu) a small animal related to the otter which lives near water and is very skillful in catching mudfish (mmale); the second totem of the Otter Clan. Oddizza kaneene mmale. lit. You have given the otter a fish, i.e., you have given something (usually food) to someone who has a great hunger for it/who will appreciate it very much.

a- (ka/bu) genet cat. Ekika ky'Akasimba, the Genet Cat Clan.

a- (ka/bu) roof of a house; head of a clan.

a- (ka/bu) mushroom (in general). Ekika ky'obutiko, the Mushroom Clan. cf. ekitiko.

e- (ki/bi) kind of large black ant. Ekika ky'Ekinyomo, the Black Ant Clan. Nze sisiika binyomo. colloq. I am not just joking, lit. frying ants.

e- (li/ma) -fruit of the mukobe q.v. (It has a thin skin, a texture resembling that of the potato and is eaten boiled.) Ekika ky'Ekkobe, the Kkobe Clan, kukomba ku kya kkobe eky'ettungulu kiwoomerera, to be frustrated in accomplishing one's objective; fail to obtain what one wants, lit. to lick at the skin (kikuta is implied, by kya) of the kkobe, (whereas) the skin of the ttungulu is the one that is sweet.

o- (lu/n) kind of anteater, pangolin. Ekika kyUlugave, the Anteater Clan.

o- (lu/n) line; row; verse of the Bible; smallest subdivision of a clan, okusimba olunyiriri, to line up, form a line. cf. akanyiriri. See also ekika, lessiga, omutuba.

a- plur. (li/ma) kind of fungus growing on tree stumps; the second totem of the Anteater (Olugave) Clan.

e- (n/n) buffalo. Ekika ky'Embogo, the Buffalo Clan. cf. kabogo.

e- (n/n) dog. Yadduka za mbwa. He ran very fast. Ekika ky'Embwa, the Dog Clan, kusanga mbwa, to have miserable luck; to go on a trip and fail in one's objective, lit. to meet a dog (on the way, a bad omen), cf. obubwa, akabwa, ^olubwa, Wambwa.

e- (n/h) lungfish (kind of long, eelshaped fish), Protoperus aethiopicus. Ekika ky'Emmamba, the Lungfish Clan. Omulya mmamba aba omu, n'avumaganya ekika. ft>rov.) He who ate the lungfish (and thereby violates a taboo) is one, (but) he brings the whole clan into disrepute. The evil of one can be the undoing of many. cf. aka- bamba.

e- (n/n) oribi antelope. Ekika ky'empeewo, the Oribi Antelope Clan. cf. akaweewo.

e- (n/n) kind of small bean. Ekika ky'Empindi, the Bean Clan, kuba kinnya na mpindi, to be very close/near, kulima mpindi ku mabega, to slander, backbite.

e- (n/n) lion. Ekika ky'Empo- logoma, the Lion Clan. cf. wologoma, Wampologoma.

e- (n/n) kind of white mushroom. It is the secondary totem of the Buffalo Clan.

e- (n/n) colobus monkey. Ekika ky'Engeye, the Colobus Monkey Clan (one of the most ancient clans of B Uganda).

e- (n/n) leopard. Ekika ky'Engo, the Leopard Clan. Bwe nnamusanga, nnali ?dde ku n~c crikc sm-.vsna. When I •met him he was in a furious state of mind, lit. 1 was like one who had fallen upon a leopard with a cub. Ekitta engo kigiyinga buzito. (prov.) That which kills the leopards is heavier than the leopard, cf. Wango.

e- (n/n) reedbuck. Ekika ky'Enjaza, the Reedbuck Clan.

e- (n/n) elephant, endwadde y'enjovu, elephantiasis. Ekika ky'Enjovu, the Elephant Clan. cf. lakayovu, omuyovu.

e- (n/n) polite word dung, excrement. Ekika kv'F,nkebuka. thename nf o clan.

e- (n/n) kind of small fish which is eaten dried, sprat. It is sold on skewers. Ekika ky'Enkejje, the Sprat Clan.

e- (n/n) squirrel. Ekika ky'Enke- rebwe, the Squirrel Clan.

e- (n/n) monkey. Ekika ky'Enkima, the Monkey Clan. Enkima tesala gwa kibira. (prov.) A monkey does not decide a case (omusango implied) involving the forest. No one is a good judge of his own situation.

e- (n/n) bird; airplane; swelling in the side. Ekika ky'Ennyonyi, the Bird Clan, okugula ennyonyi, to flee in fear of the consequences of an evil or crime one has committed, lit. to buy an airplane. Mu nsawo temuli wadde ensimbi ekuba ennyonyi. He doesn't have a cent, lit. in his pocket there is not even a cent to strike a bird. cf. ekinyonyi, omunyonyi.

e- (n/n) kind of grasshopper; grasshopper (in general). Ekika ky'Enseenene, the Grasshopper Clan, omutwe gw'ensee- nene, a head like that of a grasshopper, a pointed head. cf. obuseenene, omuseenene.

e- (n/n) kind of fish resembling the elephant-snout fish (kasulubbana). Ekika ky'Ensuma, the Nsuma Clan.

e- (n/n) kind of small antelope, blue duiker. Ekika ky'Entalaganya, the Blue Duiker Clan.

e- (li/ma) stone, brick or ball of clay used for cooking. Three of these are usually arranged in the form of a triangle. The pot is placed on top and the firewood is inserted through the openings at the sides, amasiga is now also used to designate the cooking area of a stove or oven, essiga is also the term applied to the largest subdivision of a clan. cf. obusiga.

waabommwe, waaboobwe These constructions, usually following a personal noun such as mwana, are composed of the -a of rel. + -bo- + a plur. pron. They are best rendered of (our, your, their) family/ household/clan. Ono ani? Mwana waaboffe. Who is this? He is one of our family, cf. boowo.

o- (mu/mi) heart; fig. pluck, courage; spirit; mind. Ekika ky'Omutima, the Heart Clan. Omutima Omutukuvu, relig. The Sacred Heart. Omutima ogwa mpa nkuwe, the spirit of give and take, lit. you give me, I give you. cf. akatima, akatimatima, ettima.

o- (mu/mi) totem, taboo, eky'omuziro, something which is taboo, specific food which cannot be eaten because of the traditions of the clan. cf. zira, omuzizo.

o- (mu/mi) barkcloth tree, a tree of the genus Ficus possessing a strong, fibrous inner bark from which barkcloth is made; one of the sub-divisions of a clan; a rank of chieftainship, cf. olutubatuba.

o- (mu/mi) = kabamba, a young lungfish (emmamba). It is the second totem of the Lungfish Clan.

pr.n. the name of a lubaale associated with the Gray Monkey Clan and the Oribi Antelope Clan.

o- (mu/mi) a traditional kind of drum beat which is performed in the villages on various ceremonial occasions. (Each clan has its own characteristic mubala.) also motto, slogan.

o- (mu/ba) favorite, a person who is especially pleasing. Ekika ky'Ababiito b'e Kkooki, the Prince of Kkooki Clan. cf. biita.

0- (mu/ba) Ekika ky'Ababoobi, the Rainwater Clan (so called, because of their taboo against drinking rainwater or using it for any purpose whatsoever; the related word ekiboobi, is a kind of millipede, which is the second totem of the Clan).

o- (mu/ba) outcast, someone who I has been expelled from his clan, religion or social group, cf. boola.

e- (n/n) bushbuck. Ekika ky'Engabi, the Bushbuck Clan. cf. walugabi.

e- (n/n) otter. Ekika ky'Eŋŋonge, the Otter Clan.

o- (mu/mi) edible rat, cane-rat, an animal slightly larger than a rabbit, Thryonomys swinderianus. Ekika ky'Omu- su, The Edible Rat Clan, kusigala omu nga musu, to be left alone, be abandoned by one's friends or associates (esp. in time of trouble), kukuba nga misu, to be numerous/abundant, cf. Wamusu.

o- (mu/ba) The members of the Heart Clan (Ekika ky'Omutima) are sometimes called Abayanja. It is thought that they came originally from the Ssese Islands. cf. ennyanja.

o- (mu/ba) head of a clan (ekika) or of any of the sub-divisions of a clan (essiga, omutuba, olunyiriri). The bataka formerly possessed large areas of land, kuba mutaka (mu kifo), to be an old-timer/ a long-time resident (in a place). Paapa mutaka mu Butuluki. The Pope has already arrived in Turkey, cf. ttaka, takawala.

(la) kind of insect resembling a grasshopper which lives on the young shoots of the plantain. It is the second totem of the Grasshopper Clan. See eggolo.
