e- plur. amalenge (li/ma) small wind instrument, whistle, reed pipe made of bamboo; measure for a charge of gunpowder. Enjala wano efuuwa n'ama lenge. The hunger here is beyond belief, lit. is blowing whistles, cf. ^akalenge, kirenge, orau- lenge. See also fuuwa and fuuyira.

etc. Abakazi ba gumira nnyo enjala okusinga abasajja. Women endure hunger more easily than men.

be on the verge of. Yali ajula kufa njala. He was on the point of dying of hunger.

a- (ka/bu) a small animal related to the otter which lives near water and is very skillful in catching mudfish (mmale); the second totem of the Otter Clan. Oddizza kaneene mmale. lit. You have given the otter a fish, i.e., you have given something (usually food) to someone who has a great hunger for it/who will appreciate it very much.

o- (lu/n) great hunger. Oluyala lunso- kota. I am extremely hungry, cf. lenjala.

e- no plur. (n/n) hunger; famine.

mpalakase) v.tr. scrape; fig. reprimand severely, bawl out; criticize. Enjala yali etuwalakata bulala. We were extremely hungry, lit. hunger was scraping us extremely.

blaze; shine, shine brightly (of the sun); light up; fig. flare up in anger, be burned up;' suffer from great hunger or thirst. Omusana gwagenda ne gwaka e Kalongero okuyitirira, era kati abantu baayo baaka anti emmere tekyala- bika. The sun has been shining with great intensity at Kalongero and now the people are suffering from famine and food is not yet available, n'azikubamu ne zaaka omu- liro, and he clapped his hands excitedly, and he was shocked/stunned, lit. and he struck them (-zi- - ngalo = hands) and they burned like fire. okwaka inf.

o- no plur. (mu/mi) hunger, lit. (that which) cuts slowly, cf. tema, mpola.

(la) kind of sweet potato. Olu- buto lwali lunkuba nnakabanda olw'enjala. My stomach was grumbling because of hunger.

lit. hunger is prodding me.

v.i. slip; fall; break loose. E Bu-yindi a bantu batenduka buli lunaku olw'enjala. In India people die every day because of hunger, cf. ekitenduka; teruka.

(la) owner of two households. Nnamakaabirye afa enjala. (prov.) The man with two homes dies of hunger (perhaps because the wife in each assumes that the other has fed him), cf. amaka, -biri.

ennuma (= e + n + luma). I am hungry. Enjala yagwa. Famine struck. Enjala esaza amagezi. (prov.) Hunger makes one use one's wits. Necessity is the mother of invention, cf. oluyala, omuyala, enjalayagwa.
