kabassanya (la) cause of dissension, cause of dispute, lit. that which causes them to kill each other, cf. tta.

make stiff; fig. kill; make obstinate; cause to be rebellious, kukakanyaza muntu, to kill a person; to question a person with the intent of trapping him.

a- also akamunyi (ka/bu or la) kind of hawk, yellow-billed African kite. Ebikolimo bya wankoko tebitta kamunye. (prov.) The curses of Mr. Fowl do not kill the kite. Mere words are useless unless they can be backed up with force.

a- (ka/bu) a small animal related to the otter which lives near water and is very skillful in catching mudfish (mmale); the second totem of the Otter Clan. Oddizza kaneene mmale. lit. You have given the otter a fish, i.e., you have given something (usually food) to someone who has a great hunger for it/who will appreciate it very much.

a- plur. (li/ma) wisdom; knowledge; device, stratagem; advice; wit; skill, amagezi ga bnlijjo, common sense, everyday knowledge, omuwi w'amagezi, advisor, okusala amagezi, to devise a plan. Yasa- langa gonna (gonna here = amagezi gonna). He used every expedient. He did everything he could. Amagezi tegaba g'omu. (prov.) Wisdom/cleverness is not the monopoly of one person. That which kills the leopards is heavier than the leopard, cf. Wango.

pick off (fruit, coffee, etc.); fig. kill, ‘pick off' (with guns, arrows). kunoga bantu nga ntula, to pick off people like flies, lit. ntula fruit, kunoga bigwo, to hurl to the ground. Yasu- suukiriramu katono nga lunoga. He gave a slight shiver and died, lit. (olumbe, death) picks off.

e- (n/n) louse. Ekifaananyi kissa ensekere. (prov.) lit. Resemblance (to a guilty louse) kills the (innocent) louse. An innocent person may suffer because of his resemblance to a guilty person, cf. omu- ^ sekere.

e- (n/n) kind of termite, also called white ant. It has wings and is considered a great delicacy, Ebyc bye balafuubanira byoya bya nswa. They are wasting their time. They have a hopeless goal, lit. the things which they are struggling for are the hair of the nswa. Omwangu y'atta enswa. (prov.) The one who is quick to arrive kills the nswa. The early bird catches the worm. cf. obuswa, kaswa, ekiswa, nnamu- nswa.

e- (n/n) skill; accurate aim. Wa ntomo. He has a good aim. He is a good shot. cf. ^toma.

o- also omutemuzi (mu/ba) assassin; murderer, killer; armed criminal, criminal with murderous intent, cf. temula.

o- (mu/mi) shout of approval, oku- kuba emizira, to cheer. Awo emizira ne gitta. The cheers were deafening, lit. killing.

improve, okubennanya ng'olutta ow'etlulu, to be simple, be a snap (like killing a one-eyed man). Ttiimu ya Ssemakula bwe yazze ewaffe okuzannya omupiira okugigoba twabennanyizza bubennanya. The little (animal, akasolo, implied) who is to die does not hear (the sound of) the horn. Danger comes unawares. The infinitive okufa or okufa obufi serves as an intensifier for a preceding verb. Yazina okufa. She danced a great deal/ with great intensity. Omuwala yafaanana Nnambi okufa obufi. The girl resembled Nnambi in every detail. She was the very image of N.

o- (mu/mi) haft of a spear (with a ferrule) used as a walking stick; walking stick; sharpened stick used in killing lungfish (mmamba).

o- (mu/mi) kind of tree, lit, it kills the goats. See emmimbiri.

(la) Mr. Edible Rat. Ekkubo limu lyassa Wamusu. (prov.) lit. One road killed Mr. Edible Rat (since because of the regularity of his habits the hunters were able to determine his position). It is always desirable to have more than one way of solving a problem, cf. omusu.
