e- (li/ma) slaughterhouse; place where animals are slaughtered, cf. baaga.

e- (li/ma) [Eng.] baptistery, place where baptism is performed, cf. batiza.

o- adv. like a grasshopper. Omubbi awenjebwa buseenene. The thief is being hunted everywhere, lit. like a grasshopper, cf. enseenene.

e- adv. long ago, in former times; (with a future verb) in the future, eddako. a short time ago; (with a future verb) later on, in a short time, afterwards, edda n'edda lyonna, always (only with the past). Edda n'edda lyonna wali oli ludda wa? Where were you all that time? Tulibiraba edda. We will see them in the distant future. Tunaagenda edda. We will be going later on (in the near future).

consisting of the place formatives e- and wa. to, from or at the house/place of (similar to French chez). Nnenda ewa Mukasa. I am going to Mu- kasa's. Nva wa Mukasa gye banywa omwenge. I am coming from Mukasa's where they are drinking beer. With the possessive prefixes are derived the forms ewaffe (less commonly ewattu), at or to our place; ewammwe (rarely ewannyu), at or to your place, and ewaabwe, at or to their place. See also waaboffe, etc.

e- (li/ma) place where many deaths occur, c f. ^fa, fiira.

e- (li/ma) kitchen, place where cooking is done. cf. fumba.

apportion, parcel out; distribute; assign; estimate, omusolo omugereke, poll tax. Gy'otosula togerekerayo bibya. (prov.) Where you do not live, you do not apportion the dishes. It is best to mind one's own business. cf. omugereko, omugeresi.^engereka, Nnamugereka.

be, it is the equivalent of the English prepositions to or from, gye ndi, where I am; to me. Yali afuukidde ddala wa luganda gye ndi. He had become as much as a relative to me. With a change in tone gye becomes an emphatic adv. of place, there, gy'ali (= gye a I i) he is there; he is well (in answering salutations). Idioms: Ekyo kiri gy'ali. That is up to him. Katonda gy'ali! God will avenge me. gye bujja, in the future. God is there = God knows what is best or Nze gye nnali nga jinamba nti ajja. As for me, I kept thinking he would come.

a- (ka/bu) small cage; ring (for boxingj; dock in a courtroom where the prisoner stands, cf. ekiguli.

a- (la) kind of mushroom growing in an area where nnaka (a kind of termite) occur.

a- (ka/bu) blade of grass. Oyo mutono ng'akasubi. He is as thin as a rail. as a pr.n. Kasubi, a place in Kampala where the tombs of the Kings of Buganda are located, cf. essubi.

e- (ki/bi) bowl; vessel; plate. Gy'otosula tosalirayo bibya. (prov.) lit. Where you do not live, you do not serve the dishes (of food). You are master only in your own home or your own sphere of activity, cf. obubya.

e- (ki/bi) sisal plant; piece of sisal (before being processed); area where sisal grows, cf. obugoogwa, akagoogwa.

(lu/n) direction; side; party, faction, ku ludda olulala, on the other hand, viewing things from a different point of view, amawanga agatalina ludda, the unaligned nations, nze nga nnyimiridde erudda ne munnange erudda, and I was standing on one side and my friend on the other. Ali ludda wa? Where is he?

o- plur. enzijuliro (lu/n) place where food is spread/served, cf. 2 jjula.

e- (n/n) described in previous dictionaries as: sternum, sternal cartilage; pit of the stomach; internal bodily part. It is now used almost always in a figurative sense: heart, soul, seat of the emotions. It occurs in hundreds of phrases and expressions of which the following is a sampling: mu ngeri ya kawanika mmeeme, in a frightening way. kwekuba mmeeme, to reconsider, emmeeme n'enfa, and my heart sank/I was utterly distressed. Nze emmeeme yangwa wala. I became very depressed. Otukubye wala emmeeme. You have really given us a scare. Emmeeme yamudda mu nteeko. He felt relieved, lit. his heart went back in place, ow'emmeeme etawaana amangu, one who is easily nauseated. Emmeeme entye- muse. 1 am terribly anxious/concerned/ shocked.
